Position Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Department’s Clinical Manager, the Nursing Supervisor directs daily clinical support activities to ensure delivery of quality, safe and compassionate patient care and compliance with standards or regulatory agencies. Responsibilities include but are not limited to; interviewing, recommending for hire, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing duties; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and problems. In addition to providing direct support to the physicians, developing the clinical support staff and monitoring workflow efficiency, the nursing supervisor may be required to occasionally perform patient care duties.

Position Requirements

Educational Requirements:
Minimum high school diploma. Graduate of an approved school of nursing. Currently licensed as a RN in the State of Florida. BLS and AED certification is required and must be maintained; demonstrated competency within 90 days required. Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification preferred. Baccalaureate degree in nursing or related field preferred.

Experience Requirements:
Minimum of five years’ experience in an OB/GYN Department. Prior management or supervisory experience preferred. Working knowledge and proficiency in using electronic health records preferred.

Business Skill Requirements:
Knowledge of nursing principles, practices and techniques. Demonstrated clinical competency, leadership and teaching capabilities. Ability to administer prescribed medication and provide direct patient care. Has understanding of aseptic technique. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and written. Able to work under physical and mental stress. Ability to participate as a member of multi-disciplinary team in the implementation of treatment for individual patients.

Physical Demands

Ability to lift twenty (20) pounds. Moving, lifting or transferring of patients may involve lifting of up to fifty (50) pounds, as well as assist with weights of more than one-hundred (100) pounds. Duties

Responsible for the coordination and delivery of customer focused patient care activities within assigned clinical site. Directs, supervises and evaluates the daily activities of assigned staff including, but not limited to provision of patient care, medication administration, ancillary testing, patient education, message management and patient chart preparation. Organizes and participates in the orientation of personnel. Conducts orientation and cross-training of staff within the assigned clinical area to ensure nursing proficiency. Facilitates appropriate staff coverage to manage diverse patient load. Participates in development and analysis of the quality of patient care, instituting changes in procedures when necessary keeping within USFPG policy. Communicates to staff all changes in policies and procedures as they occur. Serves as department representative in issues/concerns involving other departments or outside agencies such as OSHA. Provides independent care and treatments within nursing scope of practice (insuring proper billing for billable procedures). Supports department initiatives related to growth, development and outreach. Serves as resource and shares policy and procedure with various practice sites to ensure uniformity and compliance in caring for patients of all ages. Establishes and interprets standards, policies, procedures, goals and objectives for nursing care to accepted standards. Provides nursing care and makes decisions regarding direct patient care needs and communicates appropriate information to the other team members. Assists in setting and enacting appropriate standards of care.

Duties

Responsible for recruiting, hiring, directing, supervising, and terminating staff in consultation with clinic manager. Assists with establishing standards of performance for each staff position. Ensures staff expectations are appropriately communicated and met within the established guidelines. Participates in evaluation and discipline of employees in accordance with established criteria. Plans and organizes orientation and in-service programs for staff; coaches, mentors and guides staff’s professional development. Manages time and attendance for assigned staff. Prepares time schedules and provides for safe and adequate staff coverage in an economical manner. Maintains clinical proficiency and skills competency for staff and provide on-going training/development as needed. Collaborates with OB/GYN Providers to develop procedures to support clinical enhancements.

Duties

Serves as staff liaison with physicians/manager, revenue cycle staff, scheduling support staff, other departmental personnel and patients. Participates in clinic policy formulation and problem solving. Acts as patient advocate in the resolution of all complaints. Investigates and evaluates reports of unusual occurrence and/or accident reports, takes timely and appropriate action including completion of necessary documentation, and notifies appropriate personnel. Attends assigned meetings as needed. Cross-trains other OB/GYN teams to ensure consistency in policy, procedure, and service to community. Helps develop and implement policy specific to the independent practice sites and programs. Oversees educational programs for the nursing staff and maintains educational files. Actively participates on appropriate committees and/or activities. Supervises, evaluates and counsels department personnel and maintains anecdotal records for use in annual evaluations.

Monitors and evaluates the utilization of resources for maintaining quality care. Ensures all equipment remains in safe operating condition. Assists in maintaining equipment, supplies, and cleanliness of the unit as a whole. Is familiar with all appropriate supplies, instruments and equipment requirement utilized in the division. Ensures appropriate levels of supply stock, ordering supplies and equipment (non-capital) as needed. Checks medication cabinets for out dates and restock as needed. Identifies appropriate supply and medication levels, and maintaining adequate levels within the patient care area. Maintains general safety regulations for patients and staff. Initiates emergency, safety practices and fire safety measures as necessary. Follows OSHA and other standards for protection against blood borne pathogens. Familiar with all of the medications ordered and administered.

Participates in quality improvement initiatives within assigned area. Assures compliance with regulatory standards including State licensing. Ensures staff’s competency and compliance with federal and national guidelines. Maintains appropriate documentation of performance at all times. Attends educational in-services and conferences for leadership growth and development. Utilizes new concepts to generate positive change in the department by sharing information and implementing policy change is support of new practices and standards. Seeks involvement in activities that promote professional growth and encourages employees in same. Remains calm and functions as a team member during times of stress and crisis situations.
