Position Summary

Responsible for obtaining, reviewing for compliance and coding by the most recent guidelines all hospital (inpatient, outpatient and ASC) procedures, tests and evaluation and management services for the departments assigned.

Position Requirements

EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent

EXPERIENCE: Certified Professional Coder through AAPC and/or AHIMA. Minimum of one year experience in coding professional services.

SKILLS: Knowledge of commercial insurance and other third party payer regulations. Knowledge of ICD-9, Medical Terminology and CPT coding systems. Excellent communication skills with the ability to work with the physicians with questions or issues. Professional appearance and demeanor at all times. Excellent follow-up skills and ability to adhere to deadlines.

ATTRIBUTES: Surgical procedure coding experience.
Level 1 Background check will be completed.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Percentage 70

• Codes complex surgical procedures to maximize reimbursement in a timely manner using CPT and HCPCS modifiers plus all CPT, ICD-9 and HCPCS codes.
• Abstract, interpret and analyze documentation to ensure coding appropriately reflects the documented service meets compliance guidelines.
• Coding includes abstracting surgical notes for assigned specialty(s).
• Know and apply all respective coding rules for services rendered, to include application of modifiers, diagnosis/procedure relationship, correct coding initiative, non-physician provider requirements.
• Apply specific rules as needed for various third party carriers.
• Interact with physicians to verify that coding captures services provided in addition to compliance requirements.

Percentage 13

• Assist with pre-authorizations and any questions from the financial specialists with regards to ASC and physician charges.

Percentage 10

• Prepare batches and enter charges into the billing system according to UMSA Revenue Cycle Operations requirements.

Percentage 2

• Train and provide cross training to other coding personnel within the department as directed by manager.

Percentage 2

• Analyze and resolve TES Workfile Edits within designated time frame.
• When appropriate, discuss errors with management personnel to ensure documentation and/or codes are accurate.

• Attend seminars and keep abreast of coding rules and compliance requirements.
