Position Summary

Assist with all aspect of patient care to include surgical procedures. To assist physician during surgical procedures with knowledge of surgical / sterile technique. Knowledge in handling of pathological specimens.

Position Requirements

Educational Requirements:

Associate’s Degree in Science or 2 years equivalent training in medical related field. LPN experience or MA with histotechnician training.

Experience Requirements:

Two years ambulatory care clinic. Prior experience with a Board Certified Dermatologist. 3-month training with a Mohs surgeon on staff in a surgical assistant position or prior lab experience.

Business Skill Requirements:

Ability to work with patients having a variety of chronic skin problems. Ability to work in a surgical environment. Demonstrate ability to participate in all duties pertaining to a Mohs procedure. Knowledge of all surgical instruments on a surgical tray. Ability to administer local anesthetic under to direction of the MD in Charge. Demonstrate knowledge of a sterile environment. Demonstrate ability to dress wounds. Demonstrate ability to control hemostasis. Ability to maintain control in an emergent situation while administering patient care. Knowledge of nursing principles, practices and techniques.

Physical Demands

Ability to lift twenty (20) pounds. Moving, lifting or transferring of patients may involve lifting of up to fifty (50) pounds, as well as assist with weights of more than one-hundred (100) pounds. Ability to stand for extended periods. Fine motor skills. Visual acuity. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Work Schedule Summary

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Percentage 30

Coordinate direct patient flow and assist physicians in direct patient care, i.e., performing surgical procedures and/or patient examinations. Assist in care of pathological specimens during procedure. Assist at physician side during procedure in a sterile field. Complete knowledge of sterile procedure with care of instruments. Complete knowledge of pre and post-operative care for patient education.

Percentage 30

Prepares, embeds IN oct, cuts frozen sections, stains tissue and mounts slides in high intensity, time sensitive setting over prolonged periods of time without break, for immediate microscopic examination by surgeon.

Percentage 20

Assessment and plan of appointment set up as it relates to treatment for patients, insure pre-op of patients, explaining testing and follow-up, administration of testing, and coordinate patient care with surgeon, outside physician or referring office.

Percentage 15

Keep up to date on established policies and procedures regarding safety and environmental control. Keep work area clean, properly dispose and/or sterilize equipment used in surgeries. Ordering of medical and office supplies. Maintain files with general and patient information per HIPPA guidelines. Maintenance and general cleaning of patient areas.

Percentage 5

Perform other duties as directed such as nursing support in clinic, training new personnel, calling in ordered prescriptions and administer all parenteral therapy.
