Responsible for accurately drawing and handling all laboratory specimens that come through the location the phlebotomist is working in, and ensuring specimen integrity by adhering to laboratory procedures. Serves as a resource for specimen and testing information. Adheres to departmental policies and procedures to include department programs, quality control, quality assurance, and safety.

Note: Must successfully demonstrate competencies within job position.

Position Requirements

Education: High School diploma or equivalent education. BLS and AED certification is required and must be maintained; demonstrated competency within 90 days required.

Experience: Minimum training or experience in specimen collection and blood draws; preferred two years laboratory training or experience in phlebotomy.

Skills: Venipuncture skills, typing skills. Must have the ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the laboratory and with laboratory clients. Possess the ability to prioritize workflow and is detail oriented with strong organizational skills. Medical terminology preferred. Along with strong computer and data entry skills, must have the ability to work independently and process more than one task at a time. Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard with a minimum typing speed of 45 wpm.

Physical Demands

Physical Demands: Ability to lift twenty (20) pounds. Moving, lifting or transferring of patients may involve lifting of up to fifty (50) pounds, as well as assist with weights of more than one-hundred (100) pounds. Ability to stand for extended periods. Fine motor skills. Visual acuity. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Percentage 70
Duties

• Verifies patient identification and test requisition contains complete information for tests ordered, patient demographic data, ICD codes when required, ABN when required, billing and insurance information. Brings discrepancies to supervisor’s attention.
• Selects and labels appropriate tubes as needed for specimens. Performs laboratory procedures such as bleeding times and clotting times which do not require state licensure.
• Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures and fingersticks. Obtains buccal swabs and non-catheterized urine for testing. Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following departmental procedures; observing isolation procedures.
• Accepts tests in processing. Centrifuges specimens, labels tubes, processes blood and distributes to appropriate work area.
• Adheres to infection control/safety guidelines.
• Performs timed tests such as glucose tolerance.

• Maintain laboratory log or record designating specimens and maintaining Standing Orders as well as adherence to all policies and procedures as indicated in the Policy and Procedure Manual.
