Position Summary

This LPN will be responsible to the Clinic Supervisor. Assist Faculty, Residents, Medical Students and the senior nursing staff within the scope of this position and under the direction of the Clinic Supervisor. Perform/assist with all functions/tasks necessary to allow for a smooth patient encounter in the Ear, Nose, and Throat Center located at the USF Health, North/South Tampa Campus. Adhere to all policies and procedures of both the USFPG and the Department of Otolaryngology. Must be professional at all times and use good judgment in performing all duties as described.
Note: Must successfully demonstrate competencies within job position.

Position Requirements

High School diploma or equivalent required. Licensed as a Practical Nurse in accordance with Florida Statute 464 – maintain an active Florida license. BLS/ AED certification is required and must be maintained; demonstrated competency within 90 days required.

Experience:
Three (3) year experience in similar out-patient facility

Business Skills:
Must have working knowledge of medical office procedures and simple patient care tests and treatments. Must have ability to use good judgment and initiative. Ability to administer medication injections as ordered, within scope of your practice. Must be efficient, organized, and professional and be able to function is a very fast paced environment. Must be able to stay focused on the task at hand and filter distractions. Phlebotomy skills preferred, demonstrated competency required within 90 days. Aseptic technique preferred, demonstrated competency required within 90 days. Adept at electronic medical record and proficient in computer skills, including Windows and MS Office.

Physical Demands

Ability to lift twenty (20) pounds. Moving, lifting or transferring of patients may involve lifting of up to fifty (50) pounds, as well as assist with weights of more than one-hundred (100) pounds. Ability to stand for extended periods. Fine motor skills. Visual acuity. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Percentage 60%
Duties

Patient Care Management
• Perform general nursing duties in accordance with established standards and practices of the Florida Nurse Practice Act.
• Provide patient care support for any/all department faculty, residents, and other providers as required.
• Nursing duties may include but are not limited to assisting with the patient exam/treatments, preparation of the patient exam room, work up all patients, obtaining patient vitals, obtain patient medical history, and conduct basic lab procedures
• Assist with minor surgical and/or diagnostic procedures, etc.
• Maintain professional nursing license and CPR certification.

Percentage 10%
Duties

Organizational Tasks
• Help coordinate all diagnostic testing and labs to include but not limited to x-rays, external audiology, bone scans, MRI’s, CT’s, speech evaluations, sleep studies, ultrasounds, etc.
• Act as liaison between the department and external test centers such as SmithKline, HLMCC, UDI, Lab Corp., Corning, etc.
• Ensure copies of orders are entered into the electronic record to authorize testing/given to Financial Specialist to authorize testing.
• Follow up on receipt of labs and diagnostic test results and enter into electronic record if not received electronically.

Duties

Return patient phone calls as necessary.
• Call in prescription refills as necessary.
• Relay messages/instructions to/from patients/faculty/professional staff/residents, etc. and as necessary and utilizing “task” as available.
• Act as a liaison between the patient and physician.

Duties

Copy and provide applicable portions of medical records to residents for scheduled surgeries.

Obtain slides, films for review as requested by the faculty.

Notify Financial Specialist with a telephone call/message of each procedure being performed prior to but no later than at the time it is being performed – IF AND ONLY IF THERE IS NO AUTHORIZATION FOR A PROCEDURE AT THE TIME OF SERVICE.

Duties

Clean and restock rooms daily.
• Clean instruments and put instruments away daily.
• Maintain office/clinical supplies list and notify Clinic Supervisor when to order supplies.
• Assist Clinic Supervisor with annual inventory of instruments.

Percentage 2%
Duties

Cover for Clinic Supervisor and other nursing staff as necessary.
• Schedule patient appointments and coordinate emergency visits or add-ons.
