Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Registered Nurse, the Endoscopy Technician assists in all aspects of patient care in the Endoscopy Center. The Endoscopy Technician prepares and maintains equipment, rooms, and patients for exams and procedures. Assists with exams and procedures, transports patients and patient related materials. Assists RN in preparing for procedures and managing flow. Maintains environment and supplies appropriately. Precepts and trains new Endoscopy Technician.

Position Requirements

Education: High school diploma or GED certificate. Completion of Nursing Assistant certification course or certification in gastroenterology required. BLS/AED required and must be maintained.

Training/Experience: Three years hospital experience preferred. Outpatient experience preferred. CPR certified. Endoscopy experience preferred.

Skills: Basic familiarity with nursing procedures.

Relationships: Patients, families, physicians, RNs, Endo Techs, patient transporters, Patient Service Representatives and personnel from other departments.

Physical Demands

Ability to lift twenty (20) pounds. Moving, lifting or transferring of patients may involve lifting of up to fifty (50) pounds, as well as assist with weights of more than one-hundred (100) pounds. Ability to stand for extended periods. Fine motor skills. Visual acuity. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. • Direct and indirect patient care as directed by the R.N. Lead. Integrates age appropriate standards into care and demonstrates competence with clinical skills and techniques according to the adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient.
• Escorts patients to exam or procedure room.
• Accurately measures and documents vital signs, height, and weight.
• Secures and stores patient’s belongings as necessary.
• Participates in performance of gastrointestinal procedures.
• Prepares and positions patient appropriately for procedure.
• Prepares skin areas and draping as directed by physician for invasive procedures using aseptic technique.
• Recognizes breaks in aseptic technique in self and others and makes corrections as needed.
• Assists the physician during Endoscopy procedures.
• Performs selected procedures independently after demonstrating competency.
• Advances endoscopes as directed by the physician.
• Teaches others to advance scopes safely.
• Assists in obtaining, labeling and transporting specimens as necessary.
• Demonstrates knowledge, technical skills, and critical thinking skills in the delivery of patient care.
• Cleans equipment efficiently per manufacturer’s and SGNA guidelines.
• Recognizes and reports all changes in the patient’s condition accurately thoroughly, and in a timely manner.
• Documents in the medical records appropriately.
• Assists the RN to prepare for procedures by retrieving patient data, i.e. computer/medical records.
• Willingly accepts new assignments to accommodate changing patient needs.
• Reinforces aspects of patient teaching as directed, i.e. discharge teaching.
• Assists with the development of new policy and procedures in Endoscopy.
• Assists with the orientation of new technicians, RN’s and GI Fellows.

• Represents Endoscopy in organization improvement projects as assigned.
• Meets with RN Lead to discuss progress as least annually.
• Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills by reporting and documents clearly and concisely.
• Assists in developing competencies for Endoscopy staff.
• Provides input into evaluating competency levels.

Percentage 20

• Maintains inventory, equipment and cleanliness of exam and procedure rooms.
• Prepares exam or procedure rooms for procedure ensuring that necessary supplies and equipment are available prior to the procedure.
• Tests equipment prior to procedures per manufacturer guidelines.
• Serves as a resource person with equipment and Olympus computer system.
• Performs adjustments as needed.
• Teaches other to troubleshoot equipment.
• Uses equipment per operating manuals and Clinic procedure.
• Reports equipment problems to the Head Nurse and tracks equipment out for repair.
• Maintains and orders supplies in work areas at the predetermined inventory level.
• Utilizes supplies in a cost-effective manner.
• Cleans equipment efficiently per manufacture and SGNA Guidelines and returns to appropriate storage area post-procedure.
• Provides input into the budget process for equipment and supplies.
• Identifies and implements cost savings opportunities.
• Provides input into inventory control and contract negotiations in conjunction with Material Management and Purchasing.
